City of Vernonia Brownfields

Location: Oregon

The City of Vernonia, Oregon, recently chose PBS to assist them with activities to be carried out under an EPA Brownfields Assessment Grant that the city was awarded in 2012. The project entails working the City Manager, Engineer and Planner to establish an inventory of potential sites, which will then be prioritized for further environmental assessment. The goal is to facilitate the eventual redevelopment and return to productive reuse a number of contaminated and underutilized land within the City.

The City of Vernonia was hit very hard by massive flooding in 1996 and 2007, both events having destroyed the town’s high school. In 2009, City voters approved a $13 million bond issue to build a state-of-the-art K-12 school outside the flood plain, part of the City’s flood mitigation program. The project also received funding from FEMA’s Flood Mitigation program and a variety of private grants and donations. PBS was part of a team assembled in 2010 to design and construct the school and a community center in Vernonia.

This Brownfields Project marks another phase in the City’s flood mitigation program, designating an upland area of the City as their future downtown zone. Grant funds will be used to investigate properties throughout the City with special emphasis on this upland area. PBS is proud to be part of this further revitalization of the community.
