Geotechnical Engineering

SERVICES

Engineering solutions from the ground, up.

Whether called upon to evaluate a property large and complex, or small and straightforward, PBS’ geotechnical engineering staff bring significant experience, knowledge, and proficiency to every site.

Geotechnical Engineering Services

As part of your project, we will work closely with your team to deliver the highest levels of technical expertise, matched only by our enthusiasm and desire to create viable, long-term geotechnical solutions.

Geotechnical and Seismic Hazard Analysis and Mitigation

  • A core service of our geotechnical team is the seismic analysis of developments and existing structures including bridges, embankments, and low and high-rise buildings. We develop liquefaction and lateral spread remediation treatments in the form of stone columns for local buildings and overpasses, and design methods to reduce liquefaction and lateral spread susceptibility.

Liquefaction and Slope Stability Studies

  • Our staff evaluate slope stability, liquefaction, and lateral spreading through a multi-faceted approach that includes mapping, soil/rock characterization, laboratory testing, analysis of groundwater conditions, record research, and geotechnical modeling based on cutting-edge software to determine the risk of movement. Our team is able to model various instability and liquefaction methods to develop custom recommendations to mitigate geotechnical hazards.

Retaining Wall Design

  • PBS provides geotechnical engineering for a variety of temporary and permanent retention systems including shoring, underpinning, soil nail walls, block retaining walls, cantilever retaining walls, and drilled pier-supported retaining walls.

Foundation Design

  • PBS works with our in-house structural engineering team to design foundation systems for structures and challenging geologic areas. We have more than three decades of experience working with shallow and deep foundations, including analysis of local soils and subsurface conditions to provide our clients with the most effective subsurface solution.

Pavement Design

  • Our team offers turnkey geotechnical solutions for pavement designs that address a wide range of sites, from roadways to airports. Our professionals conduct forensic site assessments and pavement materials analyses to create pavement and subgrade designs that are create site-specific and context-appropriate.

Landslide Stabilization

  • We have extensive practical experience in landslide assessment, exploration, monitoring, analysis, and remedial treatment. PBS staff have wide-ranging experience in stabilizing landslides associated with transportation corridors. We have assisted in obtaining funding through FHWA and FEMA, and have developed and implemented specialized cost-effective exploration and stabilization methods for multiple municipal clients with limited resources.

Erosion Control and Prevention

  • To reduce the risks of soil erosion at project sites, PBS works with owners to develop preventative erosion control and stabilization measures during all phases of the project. Our geotechnical team collaborates with in-house civil engineers to develop soil erosion mitigation strategies during construction, or develop long-term erosion control systems for existing sites.

Land Development Support

  • PBS’ Geotechnical Group plays a key role in the subsurface development of subdivisions, infrastructure projects, shopping malls, parks, and industrial facilities. We assist our clients in developing a fatal-flaw level analysis from a geotechnical perspective, and provide input during the master planning of the project. Detailed geotechnical investigation, analysis and design services are provided as the project develops. Construction observation and testing services are provided during the construction phase of the project.

Ground Support Systems

  • PBS’ ground support system designs include temporary shoring, dewatering, permanent walls, soil stabilization, and drainage. PBS also provides Value Engineering services to evaluate various ground support systems. PBS has utilized techniques like soil-nail walls, launched nails, soldier pile wall tie-backs, horizontal drains, micropiles, reinforced soil slopes, bio-stabilization, stone columns, compaction grouting, chemical grouting, wick drains, and hybrid systems.

Support for Transportation Projects

  • We provide geotechnical support within the transportation development environment, particularly related to wall design, bridge design, and the cost-effective stabilization of roadway failures. Our methods include lightweight foam, soil nails and directional drill horizontal drains.  We are experienced in emergency response as well as long-term monitoring and remedial treatments.

Support for Utility Systems

  • PBS’ engineers have provided geotechnical services to various prime civil engineering firms, as well as our in-house civil teams, on water and wastewater projects. Our experience includes geotechnical exploration and testing, dewatering system design, multi-stage pump test, horizontal directional drilling, large-diameter pipe installation, temporary shoring design and providing construction observation.

Support of Environmental Projects

  • PBS staff works with our in-house environmental team on the geotechnical aspects of environmental assessment and cleanup. PBS staff members have experience in assisting in cleanup strategies for underwater and upland soil caps, and petroleum contamination removal and refilling. We have also been involved with methane migration and mitigation; capping of municipal waste, and burial of radioactive wastes.

Support for Park Projects
